Affordable Housing: We cut first turf!  On Wednesday 24th February worked started on the new affordable housing scheme! A landmark day for our village and those families returning to our village in Spring 2011. The current phase is opening up the site entrance to avoid any disruption to wildlife as the nesting season commences. There will be some short term traffic impact as we join the site drainage to the Wessex Water system in the main road but all work will be finished by 5th March. For the next three months there will be no further work of note. During this period we will be waiting for some planning approvals that greatly improve the look of these very special properties. Work will start in earnest from mid year and completed by March 2010.

Welcome to the Buckland Newton Community Website.  Buckland Newton is a village in Dorset located between Sherborne to the north and the County town of Dorchester to the south.  According to 'Dorset Place Names - their origins and meanings' (A D Mills, published by Countryside Books) the name derives "from Old English bocland 'charter land' i.e. 'land in which certain rights and privileges were granted by charter'.  The relatively recent addition of Newton is from Sturminster Newton, because at one time the Hundreds of Sturminster and Buckland were combined".

The village of Buckland Newton is situated in beautiful Dorset countryside on the edge of the Dorset Downs and within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village and surrounding hamlets of Beaulieu Wood, Bookham, Cosmore, Duntish, Henley and Woolford's Water have a population of around 600 and consist of a thriving mix of agricultural community, local businesses, homeworkers, workers in nearby towns and villages and retired people.

There is a busy and popular pub (The Gaggle of Geese), Post Office, Village Shop, Primary School and Playschool.  Nearby visitor attractions include the towns of Sherborne and Dorchester, the village of Cerne Abbas with its famous chalk giant and wonderful countryside for walking. Golf, fishing, caravanning and camping facilities are all nearby, as are holiday cottages for rent. There is a Grade 1 Listed Parish Church and a number of attractive buildings in the area.

This website is designed for residents of Buckland Newton, for visitors to the area and for people moving into the village or its surrounding communities.

We hope that you will find it helpful, informative, instructive - and hopefully entertaining.  Please take a look around, and if you have any comments about the website or the village do let us know  -  e-mail address below.
