The Bit at the Beginning ….WHAT IS A VILLAGE FETE?The word ‘fete’comes from French, meaning ‘to celebrate.’However, the village fetes were much more than just a celebration. They were about the community meeting together and bonding. A great part of Great British culture, the annual fete was at the essential heart of villagelife for years. While the fete culture was at its peak during the 1950s, it dwindled later on as the village community structure shifted, only to be hailed again recentlyin the form of revived modern fetes.Village fetes are a great way to celebrate, connect with and support a community. They’re a chance to address social issues and raise funds for local causes and projects.Adults feel nostalgic remembering their youth and a new generation of children discover ways to have fun that don’t involve an electronic device.A village fete is an amalgamation of enterprise, charity and community spirit,a fun way for the whole family and all generations to spend a few hours, and a tradition preserved over centuries to keep the British culture alive and well. Village fetes areas British as roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, strawberries and cream at Wimbledon, fresh scones with jam and cream —a special British tradition.www.villlageandcottage.comAmanda______________________________________________________

WHAT’S ON - AUGUST 2025
Friday 8th August – 2.30 pm 2ND FRIDAY LUNCH CLUB
Last month our members had a very pleasant lunch outing to Palmers Fish and Chip restaurant in Yeovil. August sees our annual return toBuckland Newton Village Hallfor a special 'RITZ' style afternoon tea. Jenny Ferreira willbe coordinating everything in her very artistic style and attentionto detail. Tea Sets are colour coordinated with place settings, flowers, dainty sandwiches and cakes etc., and the finished result is mouth-watering.So put Friday8 Augustin your diaries. We plan to get together at about 2:30 for 3:00 p.m. Our special thanks to those helpers who give uptheir time to make sure we have an afternoon to remember. They plough through so much washingup. They are our unsung heroines and very much appreciated. And our other superstars are the anonymous helpers (husbands, perhaps?) who set out the tables and chairs and put them away afterwards. Without their help we would really struggle. If you would like to join usandhave not already done so, please confirm your attendance to Bridget Hodges (01300 345493).

It was nothing more than a loose connection on the battery but his resourcefulnessin our hour of need what great. Also, to the lady who offered us her jump leads. Monday 25thAugust –12–4 pmBUCKLAND NEWTON VILLAGE FETE AND DOG SHOW, THE GAGGLE OF GEESE
The Cinnamon Trust needs more dog walking volunteers in Buckland NewtonThe Cinnamon Trust is the national charity whose wonderful volunteers help people over retirement age and those in the latter stagesof a terminal illness by offering all kinds of free pet care. We are looking for dog walking volunteers to help a resident of Buckland Newton and their delightful dogs who would love to go for a good walk. Many elderly or ill pet owners worry about their ability to provide proper care for their animals and start looking to rehome what may be their only companion. This is where our national network of dedicated volunteers step in to offer support enabling them to stay together. We’ll walk the dog for a housebound owner, we’ll foster pets when owners need hospital or hospice care and even clean out the bird cage or litter trays. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, you can download our volunteer registration form from our web site www.cinnamon.org.ukor email us at appeals@cinnamon.org.uk. If you would like to have a more in-depth chat about becoming a volunteer, please call us during office hours (Monday-Friday 9am-5pm) on 01736 758 701, or you can check out our website www.cinnamon.org.uk for more details. The Cinnamon Trust is a Registered Charity No: 1134680. BUCKLAND NEWTON COMMUNITY LAND TRUST- FINANCE ADMINISTRATOR REQUIREDThe volunteer Trustees, responsible for the day to day running of the village affordable housing scheme at Lydden Meadow are looking for a voluntary Finance Administrator to join the team. The position involves some basic knowledge in accounting amounting to around 2 hours of time a month, principally paying ad hoc bills and keeping the Dropbox expenses entries up to date, plus filing the Annual Return with our professional auditors. An alternative option is for a paid position as Clerk to the Trust with remuneration to be agreed on an hourly basis. This would involve being responsible for the financial side (as above), plus dealing with paperwork (fairly minimal), taking minutesat the approximately 4 Board Meetings held each year, and liaising between the Trustees and residents of Lydden Meadow when necessary.Anyone interested please contact nickibarker.uk@gmail.comor lysander@computeraide.co.uk

Lydden Vale Gardening ClubWednesday 9th July saw the Gardening Club’s Summer Social hosted this year at Naish Farm, Home to Emma and Matthew Goss-Custard and Emma’s Gluten free bakery business, Honeybuns. We were fortunate to enjoy a glorious summer evening with guests having the opportunity to either experience a tour of the bakery, which was much enjoyed by those who did so, or to see around the farm and learn about the art of beekeeping from Emma’s beekeeper Mick Bunyan. Mick kindly explained about the many varieties of bees found in the UK, how some have been domesticated whilst other varieties inhabited a freedom hive, essentially a thatched nest which allows the bees to evolve as they would in the wild. Naish Farm has been extensively rewilded with orchards planted hedgerows laid to create a paradise for birds, small animals and insects. After the tours members were able to enjoya sharing super with wine or soft drinks followed by puddings accompaniedby Honeybuns delicious gluten free cakes.
Next month on Wednesday 13th August, Members and Guests will have an opportunity to visit Careys Secret Garden,a former early 20th century walled garden that had fallen on hard times and has been restored to its full glory by the Constantine family, (founders of Lush Cosmetics), over the last 7 years. In addition to the restored gardens, the estate offers ornithologist’s an opportunity to see one or two birds that are not usually seen in our part of the world, andwe hope to see someof these on our guided tour. Please note that if you would like to join the group for this visit it is vital that you let Jan (greystonebn@yahoo.co.uk) know ASAP as directions will only be sent to those on her list.
The Buckland Newton Village Fete is on the August Bank Holiday Monday and as usual the Club will run the Plant and Produce Stall. Helpers, plants and produce will all be particularly welcome.Lastly, by way of advance notice I should mention the talk on Saturday 18th October by Ursula Buchan, granddaughter of John Buchan and ourcelebrity speaker for 2025. This will be a ticketed event for which we anticipate a strong demand, and you may like to put the date in your diary. Further details to follow.Antony Parson **********************************************************************************************************************

Shereallyshouldcherishthistimewhenthekidsaresmall.Oh,andtheirneighboursinthecabinnext door are partying all hours keeping all of them, especially the baby awake…The nature of a cabin park means that it puts different groupsof people, who would never normally meet, into a temporary community. ‘Summerwater’ takes this transient community and presents us with a series of chapters eachof which focuses on a character from oneof the cabins. Many of the chapters form a natural pairing as they take two characters from a single cabin (wife and husband, brother and sister, boyfriend and girlfriend). There is a wide spread in the ages of the characters, so we get several different viewpoints. This format grew on me, particularly the way each storyis bracketed by a very short passage telling what is happening AROUND the humans, in the foliage and animal kingdoms. There are reflections on the natureof bedrock,a deer and her fawn stepping out of the wood with an inbuilt fear of predators,a peregrine falcon prevented from hunting by the rain and several others. These very short pieces all hint at an upcoming tragedy and it was this that kept me reading, whilst the soggy and somewhat oppressive atmosphere may not have. You get the sense of the claustrophobia that the characters feel, and the unsettling pressure cooker tension building, culminating in a crescendo that I was not entirely expecting as the various residents of the holiday park all come together in what was, for me, an ending that was quite chilling!Karen Whiter

Buckland Newton Village Fete – Bank Holiday Monday 25th August 2025This event is one of the most important events in the Village Calendar. It is extremely popular and raises significant funds for the many causes in the village including the School, Church, Youth Club, Lunch Club, Gardening Club and other village amenities, events or improvements that benefit us all. This fabulous event doesn’t happen by magic, and we are always grateful to the many amazing volunteers who make this day so special. So, ifyou can help in any way that would be wonderful –you can volunteer an hour or all day on one of the many stalls or help setting up or clearing away.If you are a member of one of the community groups who benefit from the funds raised –you can also help to raise your profile and support the Fete.If you are interested in helping in any way, please get in touch with Simon via info@gaggleofgeese.co.uk or pop in the pub for a chat, or you can ring Amanda on 01300 345367 or email amandamckenna62@gmail.com.**********************************************************************************************************************************

The Cake Stall at the Village Fete on Monday 26thAugust is proof if any is needed, that a good home baked treatis always in demand. So much so that in the last couple of years, we have completely sold out by 2o’clock with rather a lot of disappointed customers!Would you help us by baking an extra oneor twocakes? Any sort, flavour or shape, sweet or savoury, whatever you would like to make, we’re sure it willbe delicious and disappear from the table quickly.Thank you so much, we can always collect if that helps. Jewellery& Handbag StallIt’s the time of year whenwe start to think about our stall at the village fete. Susan and I willbe running the jewellery andhandbag stall again this year,I suppose like any stalls, we worry that we will have anything to sell, so we need your help!Like clothes, you probably have some jewellery and bags that you haven’t worn for ages tucked away as it doesn’t go with your outfits. Perhaps someone else can get pleasureout of wearing it? I know the bits that I purchased last year,I have loved wearing. Perhaps you coulddonateit and then buy something different that you fancy.Buckland Newton Community Car Scheme has been one of the organisations that have benefitted from fundingfrom the fete over the yearsto help cover our insurance and mobile phone costs. Without the fete and people freely giving their time to support it, as wellas visitors who just come to enjoy it, many of the village organisations may have struggled tokeep going. If you have anything to donate, please contact Susan (01300 345760) or Sheila (01300345344) to drop offany donations. Thanks, in anticipation, Sheila Crouch.

FBNS Summer Spectacular Update and 100 ClubIt was a SCORCHER for our spectacular this year... we had skittles being struck, wellies finding themselves winging across the field, singing, lots of burgers, a goalie to be beaten, a tractor almost full of balloons (173 to be precise), ducks in need of a hook, tombola's, a raffle... and lots of fun. We also made £1,252 which all goes towards making the experience of the children going through BucklandNewton primary school all the more special. Thank you to everyone who came, enjoyed and supported.Thank you also to everyone who helped run the evening. The FBNS has also recently started a 100 Club to help bring in a regular reliable stream of funding. It started in May and we have just under 30 subscribers. We are now ready to open up joining to the wider Lydden Vale community. The cost is £3.50 a month which can be paid by standing order or as an annual payment of £42. The monthly cost is about that of a mug of coffee (okay, not at home). Half of the funds going into the club make up the prize fund and half go to the school. Each month three prizes are drawn and can be paid out asa bank transfer or cheque. It would be fantastic if you could consider supporting us in this way by joining the club and taking on a numberor two. Please email fbns100club@gmail.com for an application form. The club is run as a small society lottery and licensed by Dorset Council.Enclosed with this month's LVN is an application form to join the FBNS 100 Club. If you would like to join us, please complete the form and then either email fbns100club@gmail.com to arrange collection of the form, or take a photograph of the completed application on a smart-phone and send the photo to us by email. The form provides details around setting up a standing order or making an annual payment. Will Burnett - on behalf of FBNS

YOUR NIGHT SKY – AUGUST 2025August is the month for meteors. The best meteor shower of the year, the Perseids, reaches its peak this month. Details of how to see them are in Special Events. August skies are dominated by the Milky Waywhich arches across the sky from south of south-west to north-east. The evening skies in August are also beginning to darken, which will help with observations. This month’s constellation is Andromeda, “The Chained Princess”. Andromeda is almost overhead to the east of the “W” shaped constellation Cassiopeia, which lies in the Milky Way.
The stars in Andromeda are not very bright but Andromeda contains the closest major galaxy to us, M31. M31 is two million light years away from our galaxy, the Milky Way. In fact, there is a group of three galaxies (M31, M110 and M32) which appear close together in the sky and which can be seen in a small telescope. M31 can be seen without binoculars on a dark night but shows up much betterin binoculars as an oval patchof light. M31 is in fact a galaxy similar to the Milky Way and contains about 200 billion stars. It is oneof the most distant objects which can be seen with the naked eye. Thereis one other object of interest in Andromeda that can be seen with binoculars. This is NGC 752, which is a cluster ofstars which lies between Gamma () Andromeda and the Triangulum constellation. I should explain that the stars in a constellation are lettered using the Greek alphabet in the order of brightness starting withAlpha () for the brightest star.THE PLANETS THIS MONTH. Venus and Jupiter will be close together in the east-northeast at around 03:00 BST on the morning of August 1st. They will be even closer together in the same direction and half an hour later on the morning of August 12th. They will be joined by Mercury on the mornings of August 20th and 21st Jupiter is best observed at the endof the month at around 04:30 BST in the east. Saturnis also best seen at the end of the month at around 02:40BST in the south. Mars is just above the western horizon in the evening twilight this month.THE MOON. Full Moon is on the night of August the 8/9th. This is another “large Moon”, rising at 21:30 BST. New Moon is on August 23rd.SPECIAL EVENTS. Look out for the Perseid meteor shower which is at its best during the night of the 12th of August. Meteor showers are named after the constellation from which they appear to come. Unfortunately, this year the bright Moon will interfere as it will be in the east-southeast, while their apparent point of origin is in the northeast. The best way to combat this is try to keep the Moon out of your field of view.If you have, or are thinking of buying a telescope, and need any observing or technical advice, in the meantime,I can be contacted on (01300) 345485 or at keithmwright@compuserve.com. The times when you can see the Space Station can be found at: www.heavens-above.com. There are many free Apps which can be used on a tablet computer or smart phone which can help guide you around our night sky. You need to have the GPS turned on your phone or tablet for the best results.Keith Wright
