The Bit at the Beginning ….The front cover photo this month says it all about what a gloriously colourful Autumn we are having. These were taken at Minterne Gardens, but there are plenty of other places to marvel at the amazing variety of colour nature produces this time ofyear. Oddly, some of the Azaleas and Rhododendrons at Minterne were also flowering – notsure that’s such a good sign.My dog, Orla, is fantastic at not eating random objects or stealing food indoors, but she is still going for it in the garden – hence several holes in the lawn. She also loves a good chew on a stick– not to be encouraged, but difficult when there areso many lying around and, of course, you should always be careful not to throw sticks for dogs as they can get lodgedin their throat. Idid dabble in willow weaving last year as I have a large Willow tree, and made a few plant supports, which look great-ish and do the job as well as the metal ones, but to Orla’s beady eye they are just a pile of sticks ready prepared for her enjoyment! Unfortunately, one of these supports was around a rather special rose –Dame Judy Dench – and hence only half of it now remains! I was upset at first, but, as she’s a Golden Retriever with half a brain cell,I realisedit wasn’t her fault really and I probably encouraged it in a roundabout way.So, do I make more willow supports and just put them around weeds? Job done!If you fancy trying willow weaving, there is a Christmas Willow weaving course at The Gaggle on 12th November (see page 7).Amanda______________________________________________________

Buckland Newton Primary School Celebrates Harvest FestivalChildren, staff and families at Buckland Newton Primary School came together last week to celebrate their annual Harvest Festival — a joyful occasion filled with music, creativity and generosity. The whole school gathered in Holy Rood churchto give thanks for the food we share and to reflect on the importance of helping others. As part of the celebrations, pupils proudly donated a wonderful collection of food items to the Sherborne Food Bank, supporting localfamilies in need. Each class contributed to the festival in their own special way. Children sang three lively harvest songs, filling the church with warmth and enthusiasm. There was plenty of creativityon display too, as pupils showed their colourful harvest artwork, baked homemade bread, and even performeda fun and original “Princess and the Pea” rap, which had everyone smiling and clapping along.Headteacher Mr. Phillip Sales said, “We are so proud of the children for their hard work and kindness. Harvest is a time to be thankful and to think about others, and our pupils have done exactly that.”It was a truly heart-warming event — a wonderful reminder of the school’s strong sense of community, creativity and care for others.

In the Buckland NewtonBook Corner……Hands up who remembers the hit American TV show M*A*S*H? The storiesof beloved characters like Hawkeye and Hot Lips Houlihan serving in an army hospital during the Vietnam war and told with a clever mix of comedy and pathos can still be watched on Amazon Prime TV….I couldn’t help but think of this series as I read ‘The Women’ by Kristen Hannah, which is an extraordinary and captivating accountof the role of women in the Vietnam war, told through the experiences of Frankie,a young nurse from a privileged Californian background. In the world she inhabited, she had never considered there could be a different path for her life than marriage, keeping house and spending her spare time in the country club. However, when she’s told “Women can be heroes too”her desire to earn the respectof her parents and follow her beloved brother into a warzone leads to her, rather rashly, signing up to the Army Nursing Corp.Frankie, like manyof the troops sent to fight, is little more than a childwhen she arrives in Vietnam a few short weeks later. Inexperienced and totally unprepared for the realities of war, Frankie is thrown into her first MASCAL (mass casualty incident) and is immediately questioning whether or not she’s cut out for the job. She soon builds strong bonds with the women she’s serving with. These bonds are constantly put to the test throughout the rest of the novel and were, for me,a beautiful narrative on the strength of female friendships. Thanks to the support and guidance from her colleagues, Frankie finds her place and becomes resolute in her mission to do some good, to bring comfort to the injured and dying, and to help the Vietnamese people caught in the middle of the conflict.Kristin Hannahpaints vivid images of war; especiallyin the field hospital operating room where, again, scenes from M*A*S*H popped up in my mind. As fascinating as it was to spend two years in Vietnam with Frankie, for me, The Women really excelled in part two, when Frankie returned home. As I was very young at the time of the Vietnam war,I was unaware that those returning from Vietnam to the USA were not treated as war heroes but jeered and spat at for their service. Many, left with life changing injuries and struggling with PTSD, were shunned and left with little support. Serving nurses like Frankie, when seeking help, were constantly told that there wasn’t any support for them because“there weren’t any women in Vietnam”. Nursing wasn’t seenas active service. They’d seen the same horrors, they’d lost people they loved, suffered injuries, and been left traumatised, only to find themselves written out of history, their service erased. For women like Frankie, there was nowhere to turn to, no place where they belonged. Kristen Hannah tells the story of Frankie’s struggle to find herself again. The Womenis an epic story about a distressing period in history and at the heart of it, is a storyof humanity. It’s about heroic women who made huge sacrifices for their country and is possibly one of the most powerful books I have ever read. I highly recommend it.Karen Whiter *******************************************************************************************************************

YOUR NIGHT SKY - NOVEMBER 2025October hasn’t been very good so far for star gazing with the cloudy high pressure stuck over us. I am writing this in the third week of the month. Let’s hope that things are better this month as we are now moving into our spectacular winter skies. There has been a lot of speculation about the nature of interstellar Comet 31/Atlas. It has been difficult to observe as its orbit has been on the other side of the Sun from Earth. Based on information from the Hubble and other telescopes, NASA is saying that it is doing comet like things, resembles a comet, and thereforeis a comet, just a very old one from interstellar space. It won’t get closer to us than 210 million kilometers. Our constellation this month is Taurus. This constellation lies above Orion in the southeast and contains two of the largest and most beautiful star clusterswe can easily see. The constellation is easyto find as the line of stars in the belt of Orion points at it. The first star cluster to view is the lovely star cluster Pleiades which I mentioned last month. This star cluster is always a lovely sight. If you are just starting to look at the sky through binoculars, or a small telescope, itis an easy first stellar object to take a look at. It is stunning in binoculars, and you should be able make out at least 40 or more stars, although there are about 500 in the cluster. All of the Pleiades stars are blue young stars. It is 375 light years away. The second is the Hyades. Like the Pleiades, the Hyades is an open star cluster, but itis much closer at 150 light years away. Both clusters are beautiful when viewed through binoculars or a small, short focus telescope on low magnification. Moonless nights are the best for viewing these star clusters. Next to the Hyades is the star Aldebaran. This is an orange giant star and is the brightest star in Taurus. It is only 65 light years away. The Crab Nebula (M1) is also in Taurus, but you will need a telescope to see it. Through a small telescope itis a smudge of light. The nebula is a gaseous cloud which is the remains of a star which blew up at the end of its life. It was observed in 1054 as a bright new star which quickly faded away leaving an expanding glowing cloudof gas with a faint star at its centre.
TAURUSTHE PLANETS. Mercury may be seen in the morning sky just before Sunrise in the eastern skyat the end of the month. Venus is in the dawn sky at the beginning of the month. Mars is not visible this month. Jupiter is brilliant in the early morning/late night skyin the Southeast. Saturn is an evening planet in the southern sky all month.THE MOON. Full Moon is on November 5th with New Moon on November 20th. SPECIAL EVENTS. We have another Super Moon on Bonfire Night! The Leonid meteor shower peaks on the night of the 17/18th November. They will appear to come from the eastern sky. The Moon will be out of the way for both showers.Cont .. .
